Here is a brief explanation of hosting terms used.

Anonymous FTP
Enabling anonymous FTP allows visitors to access your Web site to upload and/or download files without a unique ID and password. By controllable anonymous FTP, we are referring to an environment whereby anonymous access can be limited to specific files and directories.
This feature is not available if the site is ordered as sub-directory, or sub-domain account.
Available with packages : 120, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
ASP
Active Server Pages (ASP) is the Microsoft application that allows web site developers to make their pages more dynamic and interactive. It is well suited for database interaction.
Available with packages : 110, 120, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
CGI
(Common Gateway Interface) -- A set of rules that describe how a Web Server communicates with another piece of software on the same machine, and how the other piece of software (the “CGI program”) talks to the web server. Any piece of software can be a CGI program if it handles input and output according to the CGI standard. Usually a CGI program is a small program that takes data from a web server and does something with it, like putting the content of a form into an e-mail message, or turning the data into a database query. You can often see that a CGI program is being used by seeing “cgi-bin” in a URL, but not always.
Available with all packages
cgi-bin
The most common name of a directory on a web server in which CGI programs are stored. The “bin” part of “cgi-bin” is a shorthand version of “binary”, because once upon a time, most programs were referred to as “binaries”. In real life, most programs found in cgi-bin directories are text files, or scripts that are executed by programs located elsewhere on the same machine.

co-location
Most often used to refer to having a server that belongs to one person or group physically located on an Internet-connected network that belongs to another person or group. Usually this is done because the server owner wants their machine to be on a high-speed Internet connection and/or they do not want the security risks of having the server on their own network.
Data Transfer
In general, any outward-bound traffic from a Web site, with the exception of e-mail, is considered data transfer. For example, each time a Web page, image, midi file, quicktime video, etc. is loaded, data transfer is generated. Each of our plans includes a generous amount of free data transfer which should be more than enough for most sites. In fact, over 95% of our customers operate within their free data transfer allowance. Additional data transfer beyond the threshold will incur a small charge.

Disk Storage Space
Disk storage space refers to the amount of server disk storage specifically allocated to your account. This space is used to store your html files, graphics, audio clips, POP mail messages, pdfs, and other files that make up your Web site. Each of our plans includes a specified allotment of disk storage space, but additional space can be purchased for any account in 1 MB blocks.

Domain Name
The unique name that identifies an Internet site. Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots. The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general. A given machine may have more than one Domain Name but a given Domain Name points to only one machine. For example, the domain names:
    somename.net,  mail.somename.net,   workshop.somename.net
can all refer to the same machine, but each domain name can refer to no more than one machine.
Usually, all of the machines on a given Network will have the same thing as the right-hand portion of their Domain Names (somename.net in the examples above). It is also possible for a Domain Name to exist but not be connected to an actual machine. This is often done so that a group or business can have an Internet e-mail address without having to establish a real Internet site. In these cases, some real Internet machine must handle the mail on behalf of the listed Domain Name.
Available with all packages
Domain Name Registration
We will handle either new domain name registration or transfers on your behalf. The U.S. governing agency InterNIC charges $70 to register a domain name which covers the first two years. They currently bill at a rate of $35 per year thereafter.
The domain name registration/transfer (for up to 2 domain names per hosting package) service provided free when you order one of our hosting packages.
Non-US domain registration must be handled by the end user, and we will supply you with the information you will need for you to setup on our servers.

E-mail Alias
An e-mail alias is a an e-mail address that points to another address instead of a "real" e-mail box. For example, an alias for "info@your-domain.com" could point at your personal e-mail box. All accounts include free unlimited e-mail aliases.
Available with all packages
E-mail Forwarding
Forwarding is a way of sending email to an address other than the one it is addressed to. Once your Web site is active, you  receive all e-mail addressed to your domain such as "your_mailbox@your_domain.com", and immediately forward it to  "your_other_mailbox@other_mail_domain.com", etc. All accounts include free unlimited e-mail forwarding.
Available with all packages
FTP Access
You will have unlimited access to your account via FTP 24-hours a day to set up and maintain your web site. You can work on HTML documents, graphics, and scripts locally, then upload files to your Web site when ready.
Available with all packages
Mailing Lists
A (usually automated) system that allows people to send e-mail to one address, whereupon their message is copied and sent to all of the other subscribers to the mail list. In this way, people who have many different kinds of e-mail access can participate in discussions together.
Available with packages : 110,120, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
Mail Forwarding
Once your domain name is active worldwide, you can receive all e-mail addressed to your domain such as webmaster@yourname.com, sales@yourname.com, etc. By default, all e-mail addressed to your domain will forward to the e-mail address you provide us when you sign up. For convenience, specific mail forwarding options are available if you need specific addresses each to be forwarded to different addresses on the Internet. For example, e-mail addressed to webmaster@yourname.com could forward to an account at AOL, while sales@yourname.com could forward to a Prodigy account.

Microsoft® Index Server
Microsoft Index Server is the Microsoft content-indexing and searching solution for Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and Peer Web Services (PWS). Microsoft Index Server is designed to index the full text and properties of documents on an IIS-based (or PWS-based) server. Index Server can index documents for both corporate intranets and for any drive accessible through a uniform naming convention (UNC) path on the Internet.

Clients can formulate queries by using any Web browser to fill in the fields of a simple Web query form. The Web server forwards the query form to the query engine, which finds the pertinent documents and returns the results to the client formatted as a Web page.

Unlike many content indexing systems, Index Server can index the text and properties of formatted documents, such as those created by Microsoft® Word or Microsoft® Excel. This feature lets you publish existing documents on your intranet Web without converting them to HyperText Markup Language (HTML).
Available with packages : 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320

Security Certificate
A chunk of information (often stored as a text file) that is used by the SSL protocol to establish a secure connection. Security Certificates contain information about who it belongs to, who it was issued by, a unique serial number or other unique identification, valid dates, and an encrypted “fingerprint” that can be used to verify the contents of the certificate. In order for an SSL connection to be created both sides must have a valid Security Certificate.

Statistics Analysis
You can use your user ID and password to access our Statistics Server (by MediaHouse Software, Inc)  to track your Web usage statistics, such as what domains are accessing your Web site, how many 'hits' you are getting, how much data is being transferred and more.
This is critical information that you can use to make sure your site is meeting all of your business objectives.
Available with packages : 110, 120, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
SSL Secured Directory
This option allows you to communicate securely  with your client without you obtaining your own digital authentication certificate. We will set up a directory on your web site where you can place pages that handle secure information. You will be serviced by Zantar Production's digital authentication certificate.
Note that  it is more efficient to only put those pages that handle sensitive information into the secure directory. This is because there is a slight overhead for encryption and decryption of the transmitted data and you wouldn't want to slow down your whole site unnecessarily.
If you are interested in this feature please make a note of it when ordering.
Available with packages : 120, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
SSL Secure Server
The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Protocol is a protocol developed by Netscape Communications which provides secure communications between the server and client, preventing others from capturing or viewing the data being exchanged. The Secure Server will encrypt any information passing between it and the user's Web browser. This enables you to accept sensitive information (such as credit card numbers) through an HTML form.

To find out more about SSL and Internet Security, take a look at

There are some important issues regarding the use of secure processing that you need to be aware of. Every web site name (i.e. www.YOUR DOMAIN.com) that wishes to use SSL will need to have an digital authentication certificate "signed" by certification authority (i.e. Verisign, Thawte). If you do not wish to get your own certificate, you can use Zantar Production's. However, this means that you will have to use our site name (https://www.ZantarProductions.com) for your secure forms.

Please note that SSL does not include software to process credit card transactions. Although you can securely receive credit card information through SSL, actual processing of the credit card will require a "Merchant account" from an accredited financial institution.
Available with packages : 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320
